MILAN MAINTAIN ONE-POINT LEAD
AC Milan have been setting the pace in the Italian football top flight this season and they are showing no signs of taking their foot off the pedals following their latest win over lowly Benevento.
The Rossoneri had a very good 2020 that saw them stay at the top of Italian football for the first half of the current campaign and they have started the new year in the same vein. The Italian football top flight leaders played the majority of their latest league game against Benevento with ten men and still had more than enough to secure the win that ensured that the club will spend some days more at the summit. 10-man AC Milan were able to record an impressive 2-0 away win over their opponents.
AC Milan came into the weekend with a one-point advantage over nearest challengers and city rivals Inter at the top of the Italian football top flight table. The Rossoneri had lost the top spot by the time they faced Benevento due to the emphatic win recorded by Inter Milan at the expense of Crotone. Inter Milan thumped Crotone 6-2 at home to secure the summit before the Milan game. AC Milan had a fast start at Benevento with Ivorian international Franck Kessie getting the first goal on 15 minutes from the penalty spot after Croatian international Ante Rebic was fouled in the box. The visitors then had to play the last hour of the game with ten men after young midfielder SandroTonali was sent off shortly after the half hour mark for dangerous play.AC Milan were able to keep that advantage until the end of the first half. Rafael Leao doubled the advantage for the Serie A leaders at the start of the second half and that was how the scoreline stayed until the end of the game. Benevento could have made a game out of the league encounter if GianlucaCaprari had been successful with his spot kick on the hour mark after substitute RadeKrunic was penalised for a foul in the AC Milan box. The 2-0 victory ensured that Milan will stay at the top until Wednesday afternoon at least. Inter Milan will face hosts Sampdoria in a matchday 16 clash on Wednesday afternoon, while AC Milan are in action against champions Juventus at home in another matchday 16 encounter on Wednesday night.
